ISLAMABAD: A new dispute has arisen between the government and the Sunni Ittehad Council regarding the appointment of the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly.
On the issue of the appointment of the opposition leader, two groups of the Sunni Ittehad Council have been formed. The number of members of the PTI-backed Sunni Ittehad Council in the National Assembly is 92.
After losing a seat in Gujra Nawala, 91 members of the Sunni Ittehad Council are now part of the House.
Parliamentary sources believe that despite a large number, the Sunni Ittehad Council is not a parliamentary party and cannot be given the post of opposition leader.
According to the sources, not a single member was successful from the platform of the Sunni Ittehad Council, the head of the council Sahibzad Hamid Raza also contested the election as an independent not from the forum of his party and won.
Peshawar High Court also accepted the Election Commission's position on the issue of specific seats that the Sunni Ittehad Council is not a parliamentary party.
Article 5 of the Rules of the National Assembly describes the details of the appointment of the Leader of the Opposition.
In this matter, the Speaker has the final decision authority, there is no specific time limit for the appointment of the Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Rules.
Earlier, the Speaker had to appoint the Leader of the Opposition within 14 days after the assembly was constituted.
