Shahbaz Sharif was elected as the 24th Prime Minister of Pakistan
Pakistan Muslim League-N and People's Party nominee Shahbaz Sharif became the 24th Prime Minister of Pakistan.
For the election of the Prime Minister, there was a contest between PML-N and People's Party candidate Shehbaz Sharif and Sunni Ittehad Council's Omar Ayub. Shahbaz Sharif got 201 votes. 169 votes were required to elect the prime minister in the 336-member house of the National Assembly.
The session of the 16th National Assembly began at 12 noon with one hour delay under the chairmanship of Speaker Ayaz Sadiq. At the beginning of the meeting, the members of the Sunni Ittehad Council protested and raised slogans in front of the speaker's dais, while the members of the PML-N raised slogans of Ghari Chor.
During voting, lobbies were allocated for the members, the members who voted for Shehbaz Sharif were allocated lobby 'A' while those who voted for Umar Ayub were allocated lobby 'B'.
Before the election of the new Prime Minister, the bells were rung for 5 minutes on the order of the Speaker, after which the doors of the House were closed.
The members of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) did not participate in the election process of the Prime Minister. All the JUI members left the hall before the doors of the National Assembly hall were closed. Sardar Akhtar Mengal did not cast his vote despite being present in the House.
It should be noted that the security of the Prime Minister was provided to the newly elected Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif before the election. Shahbaz Sharif had reached the Parliament House under full security, where he had organized a breakfast in honor of the members of the coalition parties.
