Why is leap year necessary for us and what would happen without it? Learn from the video
2024 is a Leap Year and this happens every 4 years i.e. February has 29 days instead of 28 and this addition to the calendar is done for a very important reason.
If there is no leap year, the month of December will fall in summer in the future.
Yes, February 29 is made part of the calendar to keep the seasons in their place.
James O'Donoghue, a scientist working in the American space agency NASA and Japan's space agency, explained the importance of Leap Air in a video.
He said in an interview that the leap year seems pointless, but it is added to the calendar to keep our seasons and months in their place.
The video explained that without a leap year, the years appearing in the calendar would gradually begin to look different.
At present most of the countries of the world use the Gregorian calendar which consists of 365 days but our earth completes its cycle around the sun in 365.242 days.
In simple terms, a solar year consists of 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes and 56 seconds.
The video explained that if there were no leap years, summer and winter months would change after 400 years.
Without a leap year, there would be a difference of 6 hours between the Earth's rotation and our calendar, and every 4 years the difference would be a full 24 hours.
So February 29 helps keep our seasons in specific months.
According to James O'Donoghue we cannot add 6 hours at the end of each year to keep the calendar correct because doing so would cause the sun to rise 6 hours earlier the next day.
He added that we can do this only if we do not care about the 24 hours of the clock that are important for the rising and setting of the sun.
He said that Leap Year is a simple solution to this problem that gives people an opportunity to talk about the motion and speed of planets.
