Israeli air strike in Syria kills senior Iranian Revolutionary Guards member
In a recent Israeli air strike outside Damascus, a senior adviser in Iran's Revolutionary Guards, identified as Sayyed Razi Mousavi, was killed, according to three security sources and Iran's state media. Mousavi played a key role in coordinating the military alliance between Syria and Iran. Iran's state television interrupted its regular broadcast to announce Mousavi's death, noting that he was one of the oldest advisers of the Guards in Syria and had been with Qassem Soleimani, the head of the Guards' elite Quds Force, who was killed in a U.S. drone attack in Iraq in 2020.
Iran's Revolutionary Guards issued a statement condemning the attack and vowed that Israel would face consequences for killing Mousavi, who held the rank of brigadier-general in the Guards. The statement, read on state TV, stated, "Undoubtedly, the usurper and savage Zionist regime will pay for this crime."
As of now, Israel's military has not provided an immediate comment on the incident. Israel has a history of carrying out attacks on what it claims to be Iran-linked targets in Syria, where Tehran has expanded its influence since supporting President Bashar Assad in the conflict that began in 2011. Just earlier this month, Iran reported that Israeli strikes had resulted in the deaths of two Revolutionary Guards members in Syria who were serving as military advisers.
